I saw a blurb on Engadget about this, and didn't find any posts on it in the search. Evidently, the Ford UK blog has announced they are bringing the Intelligent Speed Limiter system to market. The technology will use a camera to detect speed limit signs and limit fuel when you hit the speed limit. They will also place a switch in the car that will allow you to temporarily disable the system if you need to accelerate onto a highway, or other similar situations.

As long as you can turn it off whenever you want I don't hate this. Could save a few people from accidental speeding tickets.

I thought a system monitoring speed signs was already implemented in newish Fords. Without any influence on the throttle that is.
Will check tomorrow in the new to me 2014 Focus wagon.

Setting aside any instances of the law being "an ass" (Oliver Twist), it's the sense of one unaccountable entity much larger than the individual conspiring with another to cosset one out of the *ability* to commit crime, or to effectively put everybody on precrime probation, that rankles.

Seems like a bit of electrical tape would make it really really easy to permanently disable since it relies on a camera to function.

1. Pics of wagon.
2. Hadn't heard of it from Ford, know BMW has had it for a little while now.

I can imagine this going down in Ontario...
Scenario: You approach highway, turn system off to accelerate. You match traffic speed and merge. You turn the system back on and immediatly get bumperhumped when it sees a "100km/h" sign.
GTFO, Ford.

I pick it up first thing tomorrow. It's my new company car. It's over a year old and as far as I know it's got 30-ish km on the odometer, so it's unused. Wasteful government. Anyway, diesel manual wagon. Dark micastone paint, so not really brown. "Ford Focus Wagon 1.6 TDCi 105hp ECOnetic Lease Titanium". Like this one, but with different hubcaps .

This seems like a bad idea, when you're on a 4-lane highway with all the traffic next to, in front of, and behind you doing 20mph over the speed limit. But, hey, that's what airbags and crumple zones are for.

I'm jealous only because the fact that you have the wagon in that country means that you have the eSTate in that country, which is what I would've bought if it were available.

I would too. I just didn't have a choice in the matter, not for this company car. It's slower than my 1988 Peugeot 205 and 2000 406 coupe, probably not nearly as fun to drive as the 205 and not as great a highway cruiser as the 406.

Yeah I still don't like it, and agree. However crying "it's my right to speed" isn't exactly a winning argument. However when the reasonable pace is outlawed, outlaws will go at a reasonable pace.

When they mandate this, I'm buying a car here, and moving to Canada.
